Lifeboat Around the World

A Socially Engaged Art project by Vidar Lien and Daniela Yume aiming to connect people with their own culture and the wider world — through art.

We're here to spread smiles, to seek, and share cultural knowledge around the world.

By spreading smiles, seeking, and sharing cultural knowledge while traveling the world, we aim to connect people with their own culture and the wider world — through art (history, culture, techniques, colors, and shapes from all around the world).

Our traveling art studio, "Lifeboat Around the World" will offer art programs in ports, local children's homes, schools, and other venues, as well as in remote areas, where art education and materials alike are limited.

Where it all started, and how it came to life.

Besides the obvious of wanting to sail around the world, spend more valuable time together as a family, create memorable experiences, and expose our children to diverse cultures, art, nature, sustainability, and alternatives ways of living — we want to do something purposeful.

We feel lucky to be able to continue working with what we love, meeting our goals as artists and personal dreams.

Vidar has dreamt of sailing the seas for years, and Daniela easily adopted the idea, which wasn't that different from her initial plan of traveling the world in a van.

We have left a pretty normal life-or not in Miami. Together, we traveled to Norway to purchase what we believed was THE boat. When the deal fell through, we started the mission of finding her replacement. This, lead to the bold idea of converting a free-fall lifeboat into a traveling art studio.

We hope our lifeboat conversion can inspire others to re-use retired lifeboats, and reduce waste.

Hello, I’m Vidar (project initiator)

I like to think that I am the family captain, though at times it seems I’m not. Both my wife Daniela, my daughters, Fjord, and Aurora, as well as my friend-son Augustine like taking on that role at times :)

I have heard that I am a good conversationist, a dreamer, and a doer. For the past several years, I’ve dreamt of cruising the world, and I am exited to finally pursuing this dream.

The thought of doing something more meaningful with my time has become strong. When Daniela came along, the “Lifeboat Around The World” project just made sense.

Hi there, I am Daniela (project initiator)

Learning never ends and children are my greatest teachers! I enjoy connecting with nature and people, specially with kids as I believe that , deep inside, I am still one.

I have been working as an artist and art teacher for the past five years in different institutions and settings, such as Montessori, public, and forrest schools, libraries, art academies, after school programs, and online teaching.

I just love to share what I have learned, using creative and engaging ways.

You can totally “laugh with me” if you see me wearing fake glasses, dinosaur hands, or walking with a puppet, as I am ready to goof around if the opportunity presents.

Aurora, here, or there?

Aurora is a full-time family member, but not a full-time crew, unfortunately. She’s a grown-up - most of the times. She lives her grown-up life in Oslo, Norway following her dad’s professional footprint in the creative field.

Fjord.jpg

Hei, I’m Fjord

Fjord (11) spreads sunshine onboard. She is very thoughtful, and makes sure we all are good - most of the times. She likes to entertain, as well as to get all the attention. In school, she graduates top of her class. Very determined - just like her dad.

Fjord loves swimming, playing, drawing and reading books.

One day, she might become a fashion designer or a singer, just like her favorite musician, Lady Gaga.

Hola, I am Augustine

Augustine is a smart 6 years old, and we often forget he’s just a toddler. He brings life and energy into the family, and makes sure we all go tired to bed. He is hardheaded and soft at the same time, and most likely wishes he already was the captain. Very passionate - just like his mom.

Augustine loves swimming, playing, running as well as asking questions.

His favorite foods are dark chocolate and whatever you’re eating.
